The Peacemakers
When someone very special dies,
we will attempt to climb the mountain,
breaking the back of K2.
From the tent ridges of our base camp,
its sharp horizon rises above us,
holding out the hard promises of peace.
On the upward track,
through scree and cloud,
cold winds stinging in our eyes,
we see the trapped bodies
of those who died in the ice.
These have become friends
who also tried to reach the peaks.
We have come to climb from a far country
and now we will stay here forever.
K2 is one of the most treacherous mountains in the Himalayan range
and second only to Everest.
