His biggest gig

by Di de Woolfson

He's been playing this number
for months, never thought
he'd stick it, hanging out
at the school gate, finger-
combing his hair, sneaking
a quick fag before his girl
peels off from her
giggling mates.

Some days the gang cruise by
offering him a lot chance
to choose next week's headlines,
a front page write up
Knife fight, teenager dead
or buried in the middle section
Local pair run for charity.
