Queenstown, N. Z. by Diana Mitchener Monday. A good drying day. White sheets billowing on the line flap signals to a fleet of origami craft sailing on Lake Wakatipu. The Remarkables cut jagged ridges in the skyline.
Above the mountain range the air rips open. Snarls shatter the peace. Three spitfires are escorting a heavy-bellied bomber north to Wellington in commemoration of the end of World War 2.
Our hostess will watch the Show on T.V. but we plan to escape memories of war, taking instead the old Pig Road east to Moeraki Boulders, remembering pioneers who lost their lives blasting a road for us to Doubtful Sound; died in Death Gully; starved on Dry Bread Road.
